This big horse ran well for a long way in his bumper around here. This is very different ground and Thruthelookinglass might find it hard work dragging his big frame through it. It will be interesting to see how he copes, but whatever happens today he is one for the future.

City Runner was very consistent in his runs in novices as a juvenile and now starts handicapping after quite a long break. He has plenty of ability and has a great chance of gaining that first win today.

Black Kalanisi has not quite run up to expectations in his two races over fences since joining the stable. He reverts to all-weather flat racing in this amateurs' handicap having won a couple of times on all-weather earlier in his career. He's in good order and we are hopeful he can get himself and Fern…

I took Hydroplane out of his race at Kempton over Christmas because of the soft ground but that race was over 2m5f. I don't think soft at two miles even on this stiff track will be a problem but it's a still a tough enough assignment.

Knocknamona is down to a dangerous mark and loves this ground. He ran poorly last time but if ridden with more restraint, could be a contender.

Walk In The Storm was very promising when second on debut in the spring and did not do too badly in a bigger and stronger field in a Huntingdon listed race on return. The two Fergal O'Brien fillies pose the obvious threat.

We run two first-time starters in this juvenile hurdle and both should be up to winning this season although the favourite looks tough to beat today. Bonne Vitesse won on the flat and being by Fast Company she should enjoy the ground. Maybe staying the trip might be the worry over jumps.  

Mahon Point is a promising stayer who ran well in his bumper. Hopeful each-way chance on jumps debut.

Pride Of Lecale has plenty to prove but he does have ability. The hood might help him and the drop in trip could also contribute to his getting round safely. A chancy bet but one with possibilities.

Yorktown looked like being a reliable performer on his first runs on all-weather last year but when we tried him on turf he lost his form complelely. So we gave him a long break and he resumes now on a much lower mark. He ran (badly) over a mile-and-a-half on turf but it's a bit…

Barrakhov is the third ex-McPherson horse in action at Southwell. While yet to make the frame in six starts including one for  us on return he has finished fifth five times. He showed us something last time and could easily figure in this company off his modest mark.

The Wise Traveller has beeen disappointing the last twice but hopefully is starting to get into his work. He has been dropped nicely after his first try chasing and if he can get into a rhythm up with the pace he might well run into a place today.

I had been in two minds whether to run Slipway but the softer than expected going report has convinced me to let him take his chance. He was disappointing at Exeter when he definitely needed the run. He will need to jump well in a competitive handicap but he's a big price and might nick…

This is a bit more competitive than the races King Of The South has been winning and he is drawn a little wide but he goes there in extremely good form. I don't think he will be inconvenienced by dropping back a furlong and am very hopeful he can complete the hat-trick.

Poetic Music  joined us from the Cheltenham sale in November and made an instant hit when maintaining her unbeaten record at Newbury. Penalised that day, but now in this listed race off levels with the other fillies and getting weight from the boys, she can be very hard to beat.

Late Date has plenty of form which would give him a good chance in this modest race. He finally ended his run of pulled ups last year and while the last two runs have been ordinary he could stay on into the money at a big price.
