We were looking forward to the soft ground for Quickthorn, who has a round action, but heavy, which it could be by the time of his race, may be another matter. He's a lovely horse and clearly improving so we live in hope.

Percy's Pride is probably better at a mile and a half but with a rating of 77 it's hard to find a suitable race. The William Haggas filly looks the obvious threat but otherwise this looks winnable and she should be there or thereabouts.

Sir Busker is in great order and I'd love to think he can run into a place. He adores the track and while the favourite will be hard to beat, funny things can happen at Ascot.

Getabuck is a nice horse who will be having his first run since a wind operation. He is capable of running well today if he can put it all together after the surgery.

I think Reshoun is a massive price as he did well to get as close as he did in the Chester Cup after a very tardy start. This race gives him time to recover should he start slowly again and William Buick is a big plus in the saddle.

Teemlucky did not run at all badly at Yarmouth last time considering her status as one of the outsiders. Down to her lowest-ever mark, she must have a small chance in this apprentices' race.

Bailarico ran a promising return to the Flat last week. That will have brought him on fitness-wise and we think he will be knocking on the door today.

We tried the visors on Cayman Moon and they seemed to work okay. He has a low mark but I'm still not sure about him. Probably best watched today.

Ultimate Getaway hasn't been as good over hurdles yet as might have been predicted in view of his two bumper wins. There was more encouragement last time at Stratford though and in this maiden hurdle he would have an each-way chance.

Castel Gandolfo deservedly opened his account with a smooth success at Fakenham. He has not been over-penalised for that as he starts handicapping and he must be our best prospect of the evening.

Legendary Day is a progressive colt who won nicely on good to soft at Nottingham. There must be a slight concern about this faster ground but if he copes with it he will have an outstanding chance.

I think we may be up against it with the Gary Moore horse who even with a penalty is well in compared with his new rating and may still be better than that. The hope is he might not stay this far and Beat The Storm, who ran his best race when third over course…

We've always liked Aylesford but temperamentally he's not been the easiest to train. He's a beast of a horse who I think will like the ground and six furlongs seems to be his trip. His run last year was very promising and if he repeats that he would go close.

As the ground is at the moment plenty of horses will be going to the races slightly jarred up and Hesperis isn't at that stage. She will appreciate the longer trip and starts handicapping on a modest mark. Hopeful rather than confident.

We've been having a bit of a hiding this past week with a couple of well-fancied runners disappointing. Therefore confidence is a little low at present and I'll not make any extravagant predictions abour Mandoob except to say we think highly of him and he won very nicely first time at Lingfield.

Small fields at Fontwell today but still it's much more likely that we will have placed horses rather than winners. Only three in Blue Sans' race but it looks very probable that another second place awaits.

Peaked Too Soon had some respectable bumper form for Jamie Osborne and is a horse who loves good ground. He has taken his time to settle in and this is a good opportunity to start him off. He certainly has place chances and maybe better!

Beyond The Clouds made a very promising start to chasing in quite a hot beginners' race at Sedgefield. He drew away impressively on the run-in but Ming Dynasty now has a 6lb pull for six lengths and Brian Ellison is using a very capable 5lb claimer. East Asia's first-time-out performance at Newbury took us by surprise but stepped up to two miles he defied the penalty with ease. He has 12lb extra weight compared with Newbury back at Goodwood today and he seems to have done very well in the interim. Goes there with plenty of confidence once more.
